This 6+ year old puzzle was supposed to be of some historical importance. Legends had it that this was one of the very first "assassin level" killers which started the trend of the earliest ancestors of the killer solving community sharing their walkthroughs online and subsequently lead to the birth of the djape forum, and then later the sudocue forum, both of which have unfortunately vanished now.

Back in the old days it was perceived as a very tough nut to crack. In fact if you go to djape's blog now, you can see how one of the often mentioned solver in this community, udosuk, struggled to solve it and had to use a "minor T & E" approach to break it through.

However, for those who are well equipped with the new killer techniques developed during the recent years, this puzzle would most likely turn out to be just a slightly tricky piece of cupcake. In fact SudokuSolver 3.5.7 only gives it a mediocre rating of 1.40, which means one should be able to solve it using just cage sum analysis as well as simple innies, outies and innie-outies (definitely no chains allowed).

Note it is also not a very well-formed killer upon the modern standard, with the singleton cages and easy initial placements etc.

Hopefully all old and new members of the killer solving community will have no problem cracking this puzzle. Even if you have tackled this puzzle back then, perhaps you will find it useful to reflect on the improvement of your solving skills over the years.

I've written a complete walkthrough of 7 steps (plus a relatively short mop-up).

Here is the encrypted text of my walkthrough:

To decrypt, just copy and paste the whole encrypted text (including the header and footer lines) to the aforementioned website, into the red box near the bottom of the page, and press the "Decrypt" button. The decrypted text should then appear in the green box above the red box.

Of course you would also need the key/password (to be put into the yellow box above the green box), which I will announce publicly once the first walkthrough (other than mine) is posted. Alternatively, people can ask me privately if they find the need.

Thanks Simon for posting this "historical" killer.

I never visited the DJAPE site although I've heard good things about it. I first came across Killers on 1st April 2006 when a newspaper-based site that I use first introduced them. At the time Ruud was a moderator for the forum on that site, which was how I was introduced to his site and Assassins a few month later. In a few months it will be the 6th anniversary of Ruud's first Assassin.

I felt that the main difficulty with this DJAPE killer was finding what to do next, after an easy start. With one possible exception, none of my steps were more difficult than the "cage sum analysis as well as simple innies, outies and innie-outies" suggested in Simon's introduction. BTW I wouldn't call a SS score of 1.40 mediocre; it was quite a long time before Ruud's Assassins became harder than that, although recent V1s have been tending to have higher scores and human ratings.

Thanks Andrew. Will go through your walkthrough soon but looks like a lot of our critical steps are similar.

So I guess this puzzle is not as "impossible" as DJAPE and others claimed in his website.
