Greetings:

Can someone please help me find a logical solution to the attached puzzle?

Other than a few pencilmark eliminations, I am getting nowhere.

Thanks for the help.

Regards,
George

Thanks George, this is one of the more tricky puzzles with such a tiny size (4x4).

Here is how I cracked it:
2-(2) @ r1c12 must have an even total sum
1-(2) @ r23c1 must have an odd total sum
Therefore, 12x(3) @ r2c23+r3c2 must have an even total sum (40-8-5-10=17 minus the 2 sums above)
=> 12x(3) @ r2c23+r3c2 can't be [322], must be {134} (sum to 8)
Innies @ r23: r2c14+r3c1=20-8-5=7
=> max sum of 1-(2) @ r23c1=7-1=6, can't be 3+4=7
=> 1-(2) @ r23c1 can't be {34}, must be {12|23} (2 @ c1 locked)
Innies @ r3: r3c12=10-5=5 with r3c1 from {123} & r3c2 from {134}
=> r3c12=[14|23] must have r3c1=1 or r3c2=3
=> 2-(2) @ r1c12 can't be [13]
=> r1c2 can't be 3, must be from {124}
Innie-outies @ c234: r4c1=r1c2+8+8+5+10-30=r1c2+1 with r1c2 from {124} & r4c1 from {134}
=> r1c2+r4c1=[23]
=> 2-(2) @ r1c12=[42]
8+(3) @ r1c34+r2c4: r1c34={13}, r2c4=8-1-3=4
12x(3) @ r2c23+r3c2: r2c23={13}, r3c2=12/1/3=4

4231
2314
1423
3142

Hi Udosuk,

Sorry for my delay in answering. Thanks for the elegant solution. :applause: I did pick up a couple of techniques from your reply. Your prompt reply was appreciated and very helpful!

Regards,
George

You're welcome George. Glad to see your reply. I was a bit worried when you didn't give any response. :alien:

May I suggest that next time if you post a request, make sure to come back and check it the next day or two. If it gets replied promptly than it'd be nice for you to address that. If it's not then you could just keep checking back every few days. If a request was hanging for a long time before it gets replied, I guess it feels more acceptable if the original poster addresses it late. But if someone comes up with a quick response and then has to wait for a long time for the original poster to address it (or even worse, getting nothing back from the original poster), then it really looks bad for the original poster, and chances are that the next time another request is made, people will be more reluctant to offer help.

Just a little innocent observation from my experience on the net. :geek:

It seems the attached file gets expired after a certain period of time, making it unavailable anymore. :rambo:

Here is a text format of the puzzle, which (hopefully) will never get expired:

Code:
.-------.-------.
|2-     |8+     |
|       |       |
:---.---'---.   |
|1- |12x    |   |
|   |       |   |
|   |   .---'---:
|   |   |5+     |
|   |   |       |
:---'---'-------:
|10+            |
|               |
'---------------'

;)

[Edited: text format corrected]

Greetings,

Bigtone53, the correct puzzle has a 10+ in r4c1234 and a 5+ in r3c34.

Udosuk, you are absolutely correct in getting back to the forum and those who respond in a quick manner is, not only prudent, but also the polite thing to do. I must admit, I just forgot to reply when I d/l your solution. The day before I posted, my wife and I just got back from a 5,500 mile drive to and from the Grand Canyon and I had a bunch of catch-up work to do. Not a great excuse, but that is what happened.

All has settled down here, finally, and can get back to playing computer.

All the best to those on the forum.

Regards,
George

Your guys are absolutely correct, for some reason I typed the text format incorrectly when transcribing it from the pic. :oops:

I've not been looking in this area for a while.

Matt points out that this is interesting - however he missed the fact that it is no-operator (i.e. it is unique without giving the operators - or bothering to mention the 10). {He might mention this in his solution which I have not looked at.}

I would also guess that 1(2), 2(2), 5(2), 8(3), 12(3) with orthogonally connected cages is also unique -thoughts?
