Post subject:  Need help with Japanese puzzle instructions
Can someone please translate the Japanese instructions for me for the two-doku puzzle in the upper right (link below)? I'm trying to find out the significance of the cells marked "A", "B", and "C".

If you somehow are able to copy and paste the Japanese instructions, you can use http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ to get a rough translation.

Unfortunately, all I have is an image, and no way (that I know of) to convert it to even Japanese text.

I am pretty sure it is just a simple gimmick from the magazine. If you buy the actual hard copy of the magazine and mail them the values of A, B and C, they will award you a little present or something.

As the puzzle stands you can easily solve all the grid values, even only using a pen.

I think one of the presents is that mini-hifi on the left side of the page.


2 footnotes:

(1) You can produce the text from the image via a proper OCR software.

(2) From my experience babelfish is a much better Japanese to English translation engine than google, but even it is not half as good as a human translator with a mild knowledge of the Japanese language.

I assume that you hoped that ton, which I assume is Japanese, would help you with the translation.
Sorry if my answer somehow prevented that. I replied to your post before reading the Gattai-105 post by ton.

I agree with simon_blow_snow. The puzzle is very easy, I used N/H singles, plus a couple of interactions. The puzzle is solvable using N/H singles only.
If you still would like a translation, try sending ton a PM or an email.

That's good to know. It's one of the puzzles I got stuck on, so my first action was to go back to the original. I saw those cells with the letters and wondered whether they represented an additional constraint. Then I got to checking the puzzle and realized that I had made a mistake in transcribing the clues (changed a 3 into a 2). The puzzle is going well now, although I haven't yet finished it (restarted it at bedtime last night and got too sleepy about half-way through).

Unfortunately, I don't know of any OCR software that will read non-Latin characters. I'm sure it's out there, but I wouldn't know where to find it, even if I could afford it.

Good to know about babelfish. One that I have found to be excellent for Russian and German is at www.promt.com . I wish it did Dutch.

That was my thought (his first post arrived on the forum just as I was trying to figure out what I'd done wrong with this puzzle), but I figured that someone else here might also be able to read Japanese and help me as well. It's all good now, though, I think. Thanks for your help!

Got it finished! Maybe I should send off for that prize? LOL!! :lol:

It was a rather easy puzzle, once I got all the clues copied correctly.
