Oh, cool! I'm still slogging my way through the Journeyman edition of the Christmas 2008 Shogun, but I want to try this one soon!

Glad you appreciate the effort. Creating the puzzles took a bit more time than anticipated.
I think the right puzzle for you is the Apprentice level.

If you want to put the Journeyman edition of the Christmas 2008 Shogun onto your now well known stack of half finished puzzles, and leap into A Kazagurama, then please indulge yourself.

I should be able to finish the Apprentice edition of this puzzle before bed tonight. I think this must be a speed record for me!

I'll make sure I have several puzzles printed out before my trip to Italy next month. With a six-hour (each way) bus ride to and from the airport, and a nine-hour flight in each direction, I should have some time for puzzles.

It took me a day longer to finish this one, mainly because I made a mistake in grid 1, which fortunately didn't affect the other grids, but it definitely slowed me down.

Apprentice seems to be a good level for me right now, although, based on techniques required, I don't understand why the Journeyman level of the Christmas Shogun is giving me fits.

Maybe it is the large number of Intersection combined with the high number of N/H-Subsets?

I wouldn't think so, but I guess I couldn't say for sure. It's listed as "Hard", which should require nothing more difficult than an X-wing, although I haven't yet found any X-wings in that puzzle. My guess is that I made a mistake somewhere and just haven't discovered it yet.

I haven't found any impossibilities yet, but I'm to the point that I can't find any more moves to make on any of the grids. This is pretty much what has happened with the other puzzles I've set aside, as well. I'm not sure whether I'm just missing something easy because I've been staring at it too long, or I've made a mistake and need to start over.

Thank you! It hasn't quite sunk in yet that I'm really going (this is a trip of a lifetime for me).

Perhaps you are missing one of the required N/H-Subsets (maybe the Naked Quad like in Ruud's Clueless Special #4b).
To solve this puzzle no X-Wing is required. Only intersections and N/H-Subsets are required.

I would paste the Sudoku code into for instance JSudoku and then do single step solving (Solve > Deduce One Move = Ctrl+D) until JSduoku shows approximately what you currently have on paper, and then see what its next move is (Highlight > Next Step = S).
