I'm posting here as it is the most read area - I'll delete it on answer.

My computer crashed fatally just before Christmas, so I had to buy a new one.

When I ran JSudoku it asks for Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2 and automatically brings up the Java download.

So I down load Java and install it.

When I then run JSudoku I get the same message.

I'm stumped here - any help gratefully received,

Maurice

I had the same problem a year ago. I did manage to solve it - but forget what I did. So at least you know it can be done :)
I notice I have installed a file j2re-1_4_2_19-windows-i586-p.exe. So maybe you need to install an earlier version of jre rather than the latest one. 1.4.2 may be the answer.

Cheers - Frank

You can download from https://www.oracle.com/java/technologie ... loads.html

The one that I have is Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_19

It works for me but the font isn't quite right so if you try another one that works better let me know.

Hope this helps.

It may be that the JRE is not in the PATH which Windows automatically looks in. (I assume this is Windows PC).
You can check by running CMD. This will open a command window. Type PATH. Does Java appear in the list? (Typically as something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath;)

If not it may be that you needed to install Java as Administrator so that the installation could update the PATH system variable.

BTW - I doubt that JSudoku needs a specific version of the JRE. I would normally recommend getting the latest stable release.

Thank you both

I had not got anywhere with Frank's one so I'll try your more complex way tomorrow when I'm a bit brighter as it is 21:30 here in Dubai.

I've been working in Nigeria as usual while my Nigerian wife has been in England to sort out visa/passport and a house.

We decided to meet up for Christmas and when you considered flights, visas and lockdowns, Dubai was the only viable place. Now I've got the complex issue of whether my wife (Queen Elizabeth Wayas Smith) goes back to England or comes with me to Nigeria, given the UK lockdown.

Hey Ho

Wellbeback
When I do that I clearly get java:
C:\Users\mauri>PATH
PATH=
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath;
C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;
C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;
C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH\;
C:\Users\mauri\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps;

???

I had my broken computer fixed and have started uploading - I started with Sudoku. Sequence:
Ran JSudoku failed no java
Checked path - no java
downloaded java
checked path Java present
Again ran JSudoku - it failed again with no Java present.

Now at screaming pitch.

Eventually at wellbeback's suggestion I downloaded JRE 32 bit and JSudoku is now working.

I'll post my Christmas Triankle in the next few days
