Assassin 393

Feeling guilty about leaving all the assassins to Ed as they are the core of the site.

I was playing about with triangle shapes in NC and thought they might work in plain killers. However in order to make them unique I had to distort them. My initial attempts were heavily fishy but I got this one down to 1.3 on SS while JS still uses 6 fishes.

The previous one SS gave 1.65 but JS used the same number of fishes. I post it later if anyone wishes.

HATMAN wrote "Feeling guilty about leaving all the assassins to Ed as they are the core of the site." Similarly you HATMAN are the mainstay of the Other Variants forum! :applause: for Ed, HATMAN and all the others who create and post puzzles! I've never been tempted to create puzzles; I do my best to support this site by solving and in other ways.

Welcome back Pinata, it's been a long time since you last posted here!

7j. R45C6 = [74] -> R4C5 = 3 (cage sum)

and the rest is naked singles.

Rating Comment:
I'll rate my walkthrough for A393 at 1.25. I used combined cages; one step was originally a short forcing chain but then rewritten as a combined cage to reduce my rating.

Thanks HATMAN for a really fine Assassin. Completely different feel to mine. I always feel bad not trying your puzzles but struggle to keep up with my own.

I found a393 very, very difficult. Perhaps I had a negative mindset from seeing all those small cages. I avoid looking at a cage when I can't get it to 4 combos - which was the wrong approach with this one. Anyway, I ended up using the same path that Pinata (welcome back!) and Andrew used so perhaps it is also a very narrow solving path. Thankfully, I don't have to write a WT since Andrew's is so good. Not many redundant steps in there. I did a couple of his key steps differently.

Pinata, can you remember how you did your step 57? That was a really critical elimination. [Managed to make some typos even in a couple of half steps!! Thanks Andrew]

Different way to do a couple of Andrew's critical steps:
Quote:
2c. R78C4 = {59}/[86], R7C56 = {27/29} -> combined cage R78C4 + R7C56 = [86]{27}/[86]{29} (cannot be {59}{27} which clashes with 21(3) cage) -> R78C4 = [86]

I saw this as {78}[6] in 21(3)n7 blocked by {59}{27} in r78c4 + r7c56. [edit: my way does only part of Andrew's step. Forgot to point that out.]

6d. Consider placement for 8 in N5
R5C6 = 8 => R4C56 = 6 = {15}, locked for N4 => R6C6 = 2
or R6C5 = 8 => R6C8 = 9, R56C4 = [95], R6C6 = 2
-> R6C6 = 2, clean-up: no 7 in R5C1
[Alternatively, to reduce the rating of my walkthrough, this can be written as
8 in N5 only in R5C6 + R6C5, combined cage 14(3) at R4C5 + R56C4 + R6C5 = {15}8{79}6/{167/347}{59}8, 5 locked for N5 -> R6C6 = 2]
Code:
.-------------------------------.-------------------------------.-------------------------------.
| 123456789 2345679   2579      | 123457    13456789  13456789  | 1234589   123467    235689    |

| 124       124       6         | 13457     134579    134579    | 289       237       23789     |
'-------------------------------.-------------------------------.-------------------------------'
[edit: The candidates above are not exactly like Andrew's WT since I don't bother with the clean-up steps on the way through, but hopefully the step below is still clear.] I saw this as
a. 8 in r6 in r6c5 -> r5c4 + r6c45 must be [958] to avoid clashing with r6c8 = (89)
b. or 8 in r6 in r6c8 -> 5 in r6c7
c. -> 5 locked for r6 (Locking cages)
d. -> r6c6 = 2
Cheers
Ed
