Second attempt: in this one there are givens in the overlaps, but it is pretty minimal (26 givens). Can anyone beat it?

Only theoretically human solvable - serious swimming involved. My next variant will be fish free.

Umm, strangely I found 2 solutions for this puzzle (via brute force), so apparently you need 27 givens instead of 26 to make it valid.

The solutions I found:
Code:
TL
+-------+---------+---------+
| 5 6 4 | 8  1  9 | 23 7 23 |
| 8 9 1 | 7 23 23 |  4 5  6 |
| 7 2 3 | 5  4  6 |  9 8  1 |
+-------+---------+---------+
| 9 4 8 | 6 23 23 |  7 1  5 |
| 6 1 7 | 9  8  5 | 23 4 23 |
| 3 5 2 | 1  7  4 |  6 9  8 |
+-------+---------+---------+
| 2 8 6 | 4  5  7 |  1 3  9 |
| 1 7 9 | 3  6  8 |  5 2  4 |
| 4 3 5 | 2  9  1 |  8 6  7 |

Hope you can resolve this before the Ashes series ends. :rambo:

Edited: to the late followers, my reply above was based on an earlier version posted by HATMAN, which was invalid. HATMAN replaced it with a new version later. If anyone is interested to see what the initial invalid version was like, just reply below or PM me. I'll repost that version if necessary.

Apologies I'll work through it over the weekend and repost. I would hope to maintain 26 by moving the top left clues. I found that is you have a block of twelve givens in one corner you can place four more givens to make it unique and simply solvable. It does take a bit of trial and error to find the best positions.

Has anyone got this puzzle in code format, before I go to the trouble?
