Thanks for the point about complex numbers. Did not think about it before.
One of an aspiration for me is to produce Sudoku-like puzzles which can be understood all over the world (e.g. in rural Africa/Asia where Arabic numerals are not used), and perhaps even by aliens!
By the way I showed puzzle #1 to my 11-year-old nephew, who didn't have much experience in classic Sudoku. She managed to work out the correct answer in 10 minutes. That's why I thought it was an appropriate straight forward puzzle for Christmas. Guess I was wrong.
