Post subject:  Psycho Killer Jigsaw
This puzzle has simple and familiar rules.

  • fill in the grid using 1 to 9 so that all white cells in rows, columns, and the outlined jigsaw areas have different values

So it is a Sudoku Jigsaw, kind of ...

  • the clues indicate the total of all digits in the corresponding "cage". A cage here means a Kakuro-style run.

So it is also a Killer, kind of … and a Kakuro, kind of ...

It's printer-friendly, in any case. And this one should be quite easy. Some instant fill-ins should be quickly identified (think "rule of 45").

Very clever idea! I've always liked Kakuro. As you say - not too hard. I too would like to see the harder one!

Ok, the software is a bit raggedy at the moment, just a proof of concept prototype, but I can and will use it to give you a harder puzzle. This should be available within 12 hours of this post!

Did I make the puzzles too hard? Not hard enough? Not interesting enough? :?:

I have no time at the moment for P&P trials myself, so feedback would be really useful for me …

As I commented to Mathimagics, when I first saw these puzzles I wasn't sure how I would set them up in Excel worksheets, which is how I solve puzzles. I've now settled on this format (see below), for each cell the first number is the horizontal cage total, the second the vertical cage total and the third, of course, if for candidates; there may well be a better way for those more expert with the options available in Excel.

The demo version is, as one would expect, an easy one so I won't post a walkthrough.

Simple Hints:
Remember to make eliminations for rows, columns and jigsaw nonets.
When searching for hidden singles and pairs, don't forget the jigsaw nonets.
45s apply for the jigsaw nonets as well as for the rows and columns.

These puzzles are very similar to Texas Jigsaw Killers. Next time I update the TJK Archive, I'll add these as a separate table.
