Anyone familiar with this variant? What do the Xs and the Vs represent? (I can't read any instructions.)

Well, I found the answer to my own question. From anypuzzle.com:

Quote:
Sudoku XV combines classic Sudoku with 'v' and 'x' Roman numeral markers which indicate that touching pairs of squares sum to either 5 or 10 respectively.

All possible pairs which sum to either 5 or 10 are marked, so if there is no 'v' and no 'x' then two squares do not sum to either 5 or 10.

Meh. Not a fan of puzzles that require more math than simple comparisons. Not that I hate math (my degree is in math), but I do sudoku to relax (usually before bed), and incorporating math into my sudoku is not relaxing to me.

Not trying to distract solvers from this forum, since there are plenty of different types of puzzles to try here.

I tried the link to the VX Puzzles today. That site has 5 different levels, ranging from (Exremely) Easy to Expert; the link goes to whatever is the most recent Expert level puzzle.

This is the one that I reached today. It's about the level of an average MeanDoku NC, so anyone who has done those shouldn't find it too difficult; remembering that any pairs of cells not marked as V or X is like applying NC in a MeanDoku NC. I needed to use some short forcing chains to make a few later eliminations and placements but they were easy ones which I could do in my head, so I didn't write a walkthrough.

How about it enxio27; it only needs mental arithmetic deciding whether pairs of cells total 5, 10 or don't.

Solution:
1 7 9 8 3 2 4 5 6
5 2 4 9 1 6 3 8 7
3 6 8 4 7 5 1 2 9
2 3 6 5 4 9 7 1 8
8 9 1 3 2 7 5 6 4
4 5 7 6 8 1 2 9 3
9 8 2 7 5 3 6 4 1
6 1 3 2 9 4 8 7 5
7 4 5 1 6 8 9 3 2

This is an XV puzzle sudoku

Cells sharing an X edge add to 10
Cells sharing a V edge add to 5
Cells with no X and no V edge between them CAN'T add to either 5 or 10

I tried to play with that concept when I posted a NO VX puzzle on the Players forum (which was a VX puzzle but without any V or X edges  )
