At the bottom of the main forum page there is a small statistic of users currently online. It looks like:
In total there are 4 users online :: 3 registered, 0 hidden and 1 guest (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)

What is a hidden user? And how does one become a hidden user?

You can change your online settings (User Control Panel > Board Preferences) to hide your online status. Then you appear in the listing as a hidden user. IIRC, spiderbots (Google, Adsense, etc.) are also listed as hidden users.
