All

I have had to temporarily suspend the registration of new accounts as I have been flooded over the past few days with a very large number of spam user registrations. These all take time for me to process and remove, so I've decided to turn off the ability for now.

Hopefully this will discourage any more spam registrations and I'll be able to open it back up again.

In the meantime, legitimate new users can always contact me direct.

How can you tell between spam and genuine registrations?

Oh, believe me, you can tell. On another forum I moderate, several fields in the user profile were always filled a certain way. We were getting literally hundreds of spammers (from a spambot, of course) per day.

Which version of phpBB are you using? There are several easy-to-use mods for v.2 that will pretty much stop the spambots cold. I think some of that is built into v.3, but not sure all of it is.

One mod requires users to answer a question that requires human thought in order to complete the registration. Another mod uses an enhanced CAPCHA code that is much harder for the bots to break. Yet another mod disallows certain fields in the user profile to be filled in during registration. Still another disallows HTML code in any user profile field.

We're using all four. No more spambots! We still get the occasional human spammer showing up, but they might post one or two spam messages and then disappear. By the time they return (if they do), they've been banned and the spam deleted.
