I'm trying Sudoku Solver 1.3 on WinXP Home.

Can anyone please tell me how to enter (and remove) pencil marks.

I hope you mean SudokuSolver v3.1 instead of v1.3 since I haven't got that version. There are two ways of editing pencil marks:

Either right-click on the cell and left-click "Edit Marks", then you can add/removes candidates with a simple left-click (you can leave this mode by left-clicking on a different cell) or hold STRG and double left-click on the candidate you want to add or remove.

By the way, I think this post belongs to Software and not Killer Techniques.

Genau :oops:

I managed to do that before making this post. I could not believe that I must delete seven pencil marks in order to create a pair. :shock:

I couldn't get any of that to work :?

However, using STRG is very useful. Here's how I remove seven numbers to leave the pair {2,1}

1) Right-click > Edit Marks
2) STRG single-click on "2"
All marks disappear, except "2" :D
3) Single-click on "1"
.

Thanks. I had already googled for "STRG".

That's how I found "Genau" :lol:

One other way to eliminate in SudokuSolver.
1 Spot a hiden pair... ;)
2 Select both cells, first one with left-click, second one CTRL+left click
3 Disable all other alternatives; right-click > Disable > undesired number
4 Do step 2 until only desied pair is shown

Excellent! ;clapclap;

You can then use your technique to eliminate that pair from the other seven cells in the same row, column, or box:

1) Select the first cell with left-click.
2) Select the other six cells with CTRL+left click.
2) Disable each digit of the pair: right-click > Disable > undesired number
.

There is a simpler way.
Let x and y be the pair that you have "isolated" the way just described steps 1-4.
5 Keep the two cells selected
6 right-click > Lock > all{xy}
that will take care of all the related zones for that pair :whistle:
The process applies also to triples and quads. The key issue is to identify them... :scratch:

By the way, I also think this post belongs to Software and not Killer Techniques, but do not know how it can be "moved" there.

I have a 2-cell cage totalling "3".

I disable all numbers from 3 through 9.

I then use Lock. I can see the option "All {12}"

I always get the error message "Error locking candidates in selected cells."

I do a reset, and try another pair, such as {98}. I get the same message.

What am I doing wrong?

Welcome OldGrantonian! Can I call you OldGran for short?

You might have found a bug there. rcbroughton (Richard) is away at the moment. In the mean time, 2 suggestions to try.

1. When you first load/paste in a killer in solve mode, try using the ">" (make one solver step) button. That clears all the illegal pencil marks. This step is also necessary if you want to use the cage-combining feature of SS.

2. Alternatively, don't disable all numbers 3..9 in a 3(2) cage. But...
1) click in the cage
2) Ctrl click on the other cell so that the whole cage is covered
3) Right click ->lock->1 (this should get the cage down to just candidates (12) and eliminate 1 from all peers of that cage)
4) Right click -> lock->2 (this should eliminate 2 from all peers of that cage)
NOTE: doing this method for each cage (and manually disabling illegal candidates) will mean the cage-combining feature in SS will not work.

Hope one of these helps
Ed
