offline is correct -- this is not a fish fin for rows 46 since the *'d cell is in the set of rows; however it _is_ a fish fin for columns 358. It is not necessary that the unaffected cells be anything near a fish pattern - only that the after being touched by a cell outside the set of houses (in the example columns 3, 5 and 8), that there remains too many niches for the fewer candidates that are left.

It is widely regarded that removing the (exo-)fins would result in viable fish

here is a point of debate. If you allow the technique but not the name, [since removing the "fin" fails to reveal an usual fish pattern] -- what then do you call the move?

If you want a proper debate then go to the Players' forums (if it is working) .....

Any fish that requires info from outside the pattern (n sectors * n sectors) for survival can be called a kraken fish
